that they actually in the background check process they tried to tighten that up. we heard from michael bloomberg who said with the stroke of a pen president obama would be able to make sure that that is improved even further that more agencies are sharing information about who is mentally ill. there are privacy issues andlytandlyte -- lawsuits will get in the way of this. it is involving congress and the biggest thing that they think they will be able to achieve with the least resistance is closing the gun show loop hole where so many people can purchase weapons without a background check. the white house wants for congress to pursue the assault weapons ban to ban high count magazines or clips as you may know them. definitely the perspective of the white house is that legislative action is needed but they may have room to go their own way on some things. >> emotional joe biden says this time it will be different. thank you so much for that. i want to talk about piers morgan. he is in the middle of the fierce gun violence debate. he has been talking about it almost every night since the shootings. hi

to take you to baltimore now, it is the johns hopkins summit on gun control. mayor michael bloomberg is speaking. >> including private sales at gun shows and online. these private sales now account for more than 40% of all gun sales nationally, which means that in 2012 alone, there were more than 6 million gun sales that happened with no background checks. many of those guns, being sold are handguns which are used in about 90% of all firearms murders. and across the united states, more than 80% of gun owners and more than 90% of americans support requiring background checks for all gun sales. so there's really no debate here, it's common sense. we have laws on the books that require background checks when dealers sell guns, it's time for the president and congress to make that the law of the land for all sales. 40% where the law does not apply means the law is basically a sham. second, congress should make gun trafficking a federal crime n new york city, 85% of the weapons that we recover from crime scenes come from out of state sources but federal laws designed to curtail sales of a

had equivalent power and you have things like michael bloomberg saying i will spend money, the same money the nra is spending. the pressure is different and i think the democrats and republicans who sort of have been in the nra camp are feeling pressure they never felt before. the nra doesn't have the power they used to. by the way, they didn't do that well. the candidates they supported during the election, their margin wasn't very good. >> and reading lapierre's comments, they weren't necessarily as incendiary when he really defended the rights of people -- the message is the same but the way he's saying is a little more subdued. >> it goes to our point here, they are under pressure. they are at attack with president obama with the security of his daughters back fired horribly. the audience is the hard core ar-15 owner, it's those in the middle that support gun rights but support gun safety and oppose crime. i think again, there is some pressure here on the nra to put more of a foot forward that can appeal to people beyond their core membership. >> let me bring in kentucky congres

michael bloomberg who said we're not going to go directly at the nra necessarily. we're going to hit the soft spots. retailers who are sensitive to public opinion, sensitive to potential boycotts. cities are a huge consumer of the gun product, so if cities say, you know what, to the gun manufacturers, well, we are going to use our buying power to make you curb to our wishes, that is a lot more powerful than simply saying we want more gun control. >> ben, before you got here, while you were being -- while you were strip-searched in a busy hallway, we talked about the fact that 45% of gun owners favor gun safety reform. i mean, that -- it's one thing to say the public, right, but the fact that there are contich went -- the nra has constituents that want to see sort of tighter control on, let's say, semi-automatic assault weapons, would seem to suggest that they, too, could come out and maybe use their power to change things. >> i think that's what nobody has quite figured out is how to make them care as much about the regulations as the other 55% care about not having them. i think it
